Government Meeting Attended Today by Climate Policy Envoy Filip Turek

Prague – Today’s government meeting was also attended by Filip Turek (for the Motorists party), government envoy for climate policy and the Green Deal, whom the government appointed to this position last Monday. Turek arrived at Straka Academy already for the morning session of the coalition council. ČTK reported that he remained present during the cabinet meeting. When asked whether this was due to any special topic, he did not respond.

The fact that Turek stayed for the meeting is evident from a publicly released photo.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) last week described Turek’s appointment as envoy as a temporary solution. Asked today whether he would submit again to the Castle a proposal to appoint Turek as Minister of the Environment, he said no. “This situation de facto has no solution. I do not know of any other solution; I have no proposal from the Motorists about what I should do,” the prime minister said. He added that he wants finally to have peace from this matter.

The Motorists wanted their honorary president Turek to take the position of Minister of the Environment, but President Petr Pavel repeatedly refused to appoint him. He justified this by stating that the MP had repeatedly shown a lack of respect for the Czech legal system. The number, intensity, and long-term character of this behavior indicate that in his case it is not a one-time excess, for example, stemming from youthful recklessness, the president wrote in a letter previously sent to Prime Minister Babiš.

The Motorists reject the criticism and continue to insist on Turek’s nomination. For now, the environment portfolio is overseen by Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists).
